Whether
you call it North Captiva or the more traditional name
of Upper Captiva, one of Florida's best kept secrets awaits you. On
our island there is never a rush, but always something to do. You
can live barefoot if you choose, and wander through acres of nature
preserve, or stroll down private beaches that offer some of the world's
best shelling. Our white sand beaches slope gently into the Gulf of
Mexico, where warm currents and gentle breezes will soothe your worries
away. |

Located
north of Captiva Island
and south of Cayo Costa, North Captiva is a nature-lover's paradise.
These barrier islands are haven to seabirds and known for abundant
game fish and seashells. For thousands of years, the Calusa tribe
inhabited these islands, leaving mysterious mounds of empty seashells
behind.

Spaniards
searching for gold and the Fountain of Youth drove
many of the native peoples off the islands, and legendary pirate
Jose Gaspar and his men used the islands as a base camp for their
exploits. North Captiva is much the same as it was when observed
by Ponce De Leon in the early 1500s. Legend has it that pirates
held beautiful women captive for ransom on these islands, hence
the name Captiva. Some believe pirate treasure is still buried on
these islands, just waiting to be discovered. We
have discovered that the natural beauty of the island is the real
treasure.

North
Captiva Island
was separated from Captiva during the hurricane of 1921. The island
is approximately four miles long and one-half mile wide at its widest
point. This tropical retreat is just 20-25 minutes by boat from
Pine Island. The island consists of three main areas: a small area
of secluded homes sits on the southernmost tip, a large section
of State-owned nature preserve takes up almost half the island,
and the north end has been carefully developed to preserve the balance
with nature. There is no pavement, and the only means of transportation
are on foot, bicycle, or by electric golf cart. Private dwellings
are nestled discretely within native vegetation, and the island's
birds and wildlife share space with residents and guests.
